Inter/Micro 2025: Paper Fiber Microscopy and Analysis 2-Day Workshop Event ended

This hands-on workshop will concentrate on the microscopy, sample preparation, and analysis of some common types of wood and other fibers used in the pulp and paper industry. Participants in this workshop will learn how to use various wood and reference pulp and paper product material and slurries to make their own microscope slide preparations that can be studied and kept for their own use. This hands-on 2-day workshop offers detailed instruction in microanalysis, including chemical staining and microscopical identification techniques, used for wood and paper fibers. A certificate of successful completion from McCrone Research Institute will be awarded to each student at the conclusion of the workshop.

Walter J. Rantanen, Technical Leader of the Fiber Lab at SGS-IPS, holds a B.S. in Wood Products Engineering with an emphasis on wood anatomy from SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, Syracuse, NY. Mr. Rantanen is frequently consulted in cases of industrial, forensic, conservation, and other sciences for his expertise in fiber identification and various methods of processing and source determination. He has more than 40 years experience conducting paper fiber analysis courses through his association with both SGS-IPS and The Institute of Paper Chemistry.
