EXCERPT FROM TRANSLATOR'S PREFACE
For over fifteen years in chemical microscopy, I had hoped that a work might be available which would do for organic chemistry what Chamot and Mason have accomplished for inorganic analysis — to provide a complete summary of microchemical tests, easy to apply and certain of results, for identifying pure organic compounds and resolving them from mixtures or from their naturally occurring states. Such a work was found in 1965, residing in the library of the American Cyanamid Company’s Organic Chemicals Division in Bound Brook, New Jersey — the German original of Behrens-Kley’s Organische Mikrochemische Analyse, published in 1922. To make this book more generally available, I undertook its first translation into English, a task of several years’ duration. - Richard E. Stevens
